  • 2014 Smart Manufacturing Technologies Survey
    Published November 2014
In 2014, Ubisense commissioned SME and Manufacturing Engineering Media to conduct the Smart Manufacturing Technologies Survey on its behalf. This survey was designed to collect feedback about how manufacturers use real-time intelligence to gauge performance indicators, such as unscheduled downtime, productivity and quality issues. It targeted manufacturing engineers, as well as product design and quality-management professionals; was carried out over a three-week period; and garnered responses from 252 U.S.-based manufacturers. • Deploying Intelligent Work-in-Process Through RFID
    Published November 2013
Entigral's L. Allen Bennett offers tips on how to identify the need for and then position an RFID-based solution for intelligent work-in-process (WIP). Bennett addresses aspects that plant managers should consider when designing, implementing and using RFID solutions: knowing the current process, its timing, its strengths and improvement needs; understanding the physics of RFID, as well as a facility's environmental conditions; and recognizing how to identify, minimize and handle exceptions. • Improving Patient Safety and Hospital Efficiency With RFID and RTLS Technologies
    Published July 2013
Health-care facilities employ radio frequency identification and real-time location systems to identify, locate and monitor patients, visitors, staff members, assets and equipment. These technologies improve safety, enhance the quality of care, reduce financial waste and foster patient satisfaction. This white paper, written by Schneider Electric's Steve Nibbelink, provides guidance about how RFID and RTLS can be leveraged though integration with security control and monitoring systems.
  • Yard Management: An Operator's Perspective
    Published June 2013
Transportation-management consultant Charles H. Kerr reviews the major segments of yard-management systems (YMS) and discusses key points that should be considered when choosing such a solution. The application of real-time locating system (RTLS) and RFID tech¬nologies is supported by some YMS products, which enhances solutions for larger and more complex yard operations. Kerr discusses gate management, yard operations, switcher productivity and dock-door management, and explains how an effective YMS provides planning, management and execution in the yard, facilitating increased flow velocity of goods moving through the supply chain.
